I'm surprised you didn't mention the satanic/Luciferian symbols and undertones, especially that you're a star song and the whole do as thou wilt theme.

Honestly, outside of the Lucifer/Morning Star connection, it didn't really occur to me, but since you've pointed it out... I have no idea how I missed it. I mean, she has a pet goat. A talking pet goat that encourages her to tear down the kingdom in her quest to do as thou wilt. I was too busy trying to find some communist overtones to the narrative that the blatantly satanic elements of it completely passed me by. Thanks for pointing it out - I'm going to make an addendum to the article accordingly.

My wife who used to roll her eyes whenever I went on an alcohol filed rant about technodemonic ritual cinemagick pointed out that the goat was given a voice, one with sexual overtones yet wearing little kid pajamas. Also, one of the writer/directors looks just like the Asian crippled character, complete creepy self insert.

Yakubian Ape's avatar

Hm. I noticed there were several jokes that REALLY pressed the sexual overtones of the goat in the movie. I thought it was weird, but I thought it was just a failed attempt at making a joke, not something more sinister. Clearly, I need to tighten my schizo goggles the next time I watch a movie because I must be slipping.

Also, I looked it up and you're right. It's the same director from Raya and the Last Dragon who admitted the obnoxious blue dragon was supposed to be something of a self-insert when she became human. Interestingly, in Encanto, the main character looks just like one the lead writers, as well. What a strange pattern... I'm sure it's all just a coincidence.

> Magnifico becomes evil because he’s threatened by the Star’s ability to grant wishes. Like, comically evil. He comes off as a little dickish at first but he turns into a cackling, wide-eyed maniac in the span of, like, a minute, maybe.

I try not to sound like a satanic-panic 90s Baptist preacher, but damn. You're telling me the one called "Star" is a "wish-granting" being from the heavens, who comes down and helps the bratty human defy the mighty "wish-granting" king? All this cast as if the bratty human is pure and righteous because she obeys herself rather than the king, and as if the king is ackshually super evil and tyrannical by the mere fact that he has power, and is a masculine king... This is every leftist's bad theology. They think Satan is somehow an agent for good, helping them out, promoting #equality #peace #individualism or something. Lol

I'm not going to lie - I was so distracted by just how bad every other aspect of the movie was that the oblique Luciferian symbolism flew right over my head. Like, it occurred to me that Lucifer, Morning Star, that kind of thing, but I didn't really put together much more than that. But, now that I think about it... well, the Star's first wish granted is to give a voice to the girl's pet goat, who is then one of the biggest proponents of her doing what she does throughout the movie. Make of that what you will.

There's an argument to be made that Lasseter was the one person left holding the show together. It'll be interesting to see how the new company he's heading up pans out. I heard their first movie wasn't all that great, but at the same time, the paid shills in the media have very little interest in saying anything good about a prospective rival to the Mouse, and, even if it is, they have a lot of future projects already lined up, including one from Brad Bird. I also have to wonder if Iger didn't drive out Lasseter for fear that he might take his spot one day. Regardless, I'm sure he regrets that decision now.

My wife and I took our daughter on Thanksgiving morning to see it, fucking horrible. My wife pulled the same thing your friend did and went to the "bathroom" for an extended period of time. I think she just stared at the wall or something because she couldn't stand the movie. Wish is the shittiest big budget Disney full feature of all time. I can't think of a shittier movie and that Adventure Planet one really really sucked.

David Perlmutter's avatar

Okay, NOW I see why the movie sucks. Disney used to succeed by making its product palatable for ALL audiences. This is a completely adverse approach.

The feature film division needs to take some pointers from the television animation division, which accomplishes many of its objectives in less time regularly and doesn't alienate the people for whom the film is intended for.

I suspect a round of firings and layoffs at the studio will come next...

Expand full comment
Yakubian Ape's avatar

Adverse is a good word for it. There's a sense of contempt the movie has for the classic Disney formula that I imagine feels insulting to anyone who actually likes those movies - myself included. It just feels... hostile.

I can't imagine that four or five massive flops this year alone won't lead to more bleeding, too, I agree. The real question is if anyone in a position to make any real changes will be shown the door, though. Against all logic, I highly doubt Bob Iger will be relieved of his duties, even though he probably should be.

I've held to the opinion for a long time that Disney is in the propaganda, not entertainment, business now. Bob Iger believes that Disney is his own independent city-state that conducts itself like the East India Company in the 18th century.

The company produces agitprop by spiteful mutants, for spiteful mutants.

I'm inclined to agree. If you look at the way Disney operates within the state of Florida - or did, I'm not entirely sure how the legal battle with DeSantis shook out, or if it's even over - it certainly has the authority to act as an independent entity within the state.

Re: the death of Disney, Disney has more money than God. They aren't going anywhere. They're the Vatican of the consoomer faith. 600 years into the apocalypse there will be Disney animators producing hand-drawn flipbook copies of classic Disney films and selling them for outrageous prices at mutant infested scrap markets.

Meanwhile crack teams of Disney assassins will disappear children who are alleged to have produced an image of the holy mouse without prior written consent from the Keepers of the Vault.

If they went bankrupt they'd be bailed out or bought up faster than you could blink and nothing, absolutely nothing, would change. That there is a market for Disney Doom cope big enough to support dozens of Youtubers and bloggers just blows my mind. Not only because it's absurd, but why? Disney sucks, pay attention to something else. Why does anyone need a 24/7 feed of the particular reasons Disney sucks today according to the Disney doomer hive mind? Who watches this? I'm lost.

---

As for Wish, I called the plot as soon as my wife told me the premise "a king who grants wishes at his discretion". To which I said, "it's going to be a brown girl who is unhappy because she didn't get her wish so she dethrones him, steals his power and gives everyone everything that they ever wanted and they all live happily ever after. Cue muh capitalism/muh white supremacy/etc. etc." It was the most tedious thing I could think of to do with that premise, so naturally that's what they went with. Not sure why anybody pays any attention to this stuff. Not that it would hurt Disney if nobody did, because they have more money than God.

I... hang on...

"On the day of her crusty old granddaddy’s hundredth birthday, seventeen year old Asha"

If grandpappy is 100 and Asha is 17, that means there's an 83 year gap between them. Divide in half (roughly) that would mean Grandpa had Asha's parent at 42, who then had Asha at 41. Which... doesn't seem likely in a medieval kingdom unless we're talking both the parent and Asha is like, the youngest of 12 children. Not impossible just... weird. Seems like it should have been her great-grandfather at least.

(Though i do have a classmate who is pregnant with her 3rd or 4th child at 42.)

Anyway still going through review. Didn't know if you heard about the romance the movie almost had...

That's probably a good rule of thumb to use going forward. My schizo goggles must be failing me because, usually, I pick up on that stuff pretty quick, but this time it just flew over my head. Kind of ingenious of them to disguise all of beneath so many layers of bad that it just kind of flies under the radar.

Also, I think we'll see if that's really the case or not going forward. If Disney is hypothetically, to our mutual surprise, misguided but still profit oriented, 2024 will be the year they make some serious course corrections. But, if they continue at pace after a year with maybe two or three movies that made money out of seven or eight, it'll be completely beyond doubt that, no, it's not about the money, and they're all in til the bitter end. My question is, even if the message trumps the money, once the money dries up, how does the message get out? I know that, even under the most ideal circumstances with flop after flop after flop, it will still take several years before the Disney coffers run out, but when they do, who's going to keep subsidizing their failure? The government? Wealthy activist investors? The WEF itself? I'd say we'll see but, honestly, I hope we don't and it doesn't get that bad. But, time will tell. All I know is that it'll be interesting to see where they go from here.

I can't imagine what kind of low-impulse control, low-IQ animal can justify violating a person while they're trying to work their job and just say, "It's vacation brain!" Slob is too kind. I can't find it now but if you can find the horror story about the poor guy who played Peter Pan, it'll make your skin crawl. There was literally a fandom that formed on Tumblr around this one individual guy and people were going to the park solely to see him, and it escalated to actual stalking and harassment when he wasn't even on the job. Real sick shit.

Speaking of shit... I sure hope the janitorial staff gets paid decently.

Thank you. That's actually quite a compliment, because I tend to feel the same way. I try to avoid just baselessly kvetching about bad media these days and try to at least be entertaining and have a salient point, since complaining for the sake of complaining accomplishes nothing, and this movie... man, it tested my conviction in "not complaining just to complain", so I'm glad it didn't come off as nothing but impotent whinging. Or, if it did, at least it was well written.

That being said, I have little doubt there's anything coincidental about the Luciferian themes in the movie. I doubt most people involved in the production are well-read enough on the topic to really know what they were doing, but there's no way someone involved in the script writing process didn't. The goat in particular is just... it's too much to have not been deliberate.

Yesterday, while my hungry little gray cells were gorging upon this brutally delightful piece, I decided to post a couple of excerpts you might find refreshing. You know, it's kind of funny because I thought you were suggesting that I was an idiot that needed to be catalogued, which - hey, I've been called worse things, and sometimes I'm certainly not beating the allegations. But I appreciate the comments. I've often tried to segregate the different tiers of various people that seem to be intent on destroying the very fabric of society, and I've always thought painting with a broad-brush and assuming the well-meaning idiot is the same as the useful idiot, when, hopefully, maybe, potentially, one can be reasoned with if approached the right way. Maybe. I try to be an optimist, is all.

That being said, I've been getting a lot more into Substack fiction recently, so I'll give it a look when I have the time.

The Know-it-all or Educated idiot – Given enough time, societies that do not take care of their idiot population, a group of special persons will arise. These idiots are capable of presenting themselves as true “authorities” in many different fields. I-4s can be, but not always are - academics, journalists, entertainers, politicians, lawyers, scientists, and doctors. The I-4s are the chief engineers of horrible dystopias; this they achieve by propagating their idiocy, enshrining lack of critical thinking, and blind obedience to authority. They can be found in low to medium, and high tier government positions – working as bureaucrats the I-4s maintain the status quo of decay. I-4s are some of the most dangerous idiots because they create more like them and help brainwash lower tier idiots, keep them docile and obedient. Even if a society finds a way to lower its population of I-1s, I-2s, and I-3s – if not rooted out, the I-4s will eventually produce more idiots. Since I-4s suffer from overinflated egos, it is natural for them to populate academia and become “educators”; these self-professed “sages” are often the authors of all school textbooks. Many I-4 “entertainers” are propped up by authoritarian states, cults or political groups, to promote utopian ideals and spread propaganda. Before the inevitable civilizational collapse, I-4 “lawmakers” will change or create countless new laws; all in an effort to “fix” the things which they had a hand in destroying.

The Deluded or Useful idiot – In societies with sizable I-1 and I-2 populations, it is inevitable that a “higher” tier morons are soon to appear. While the first two are not an immediate threat and, in most cases can be somewhat productive members of society, I-3s are useless. Even if oftentimes they are not indicative of, I-3s are always the product of a decaying civilization. If not in all, in most cases the I-3 are parasitic; they work as unskilled laborers and not because of some trauma, but because they are lazy. The deluded ones have no ability to think critically; they actively attack everything positive and constructive which made their host society advanced. One of the traits indicative to all I-3s is denial of objective reality. This idiot type is oftentimes fully immersed in some rather ludicrous and quite farcical theory. The force of their delusions is such, that no amount of observation, access to factual data or logic, could ever change their minds. I-3s are known to vehemently oppose any contradictory information and to such an extent, that they will engage in obsessive ridicule. They will keep producing various media, in an effort to debunk those who are often just trying to help them. If let to their own devices, a big blob of I-3s will effectively suck the lifeblood out of any civilization, destroy its values and bring total, complete ruination.

The Naive idiot – These can become a civilizational threat if let without direction and when present in great numbers, will always cause societal collapse. The primary characteristic of all I-2s is their extreme naivety – they rarely fact-check what they are being told. As a result, these individuals fall prey to various schemes, scams; they are easily brainwashed and turned into a docile serf/peon class. Statists and fanatical Utopians love the I-2s – they make for the best, most obedient tax slaves. With time, just like the I-1s, many I-2s will inevitably transform and turn into more dangerous, higher tier idiots.

The Benign idiot – They are not a serious threat to civilization, unless in overwhelming numbers. Societies with low I-1 counts will function normally, the “benigns” are not destructive on their own. Usually, people will guide and help the I-1s acquire useful skills, make sure they can take good care of themselves. With enough effort these civilizations will continue to advance, even with sizable populations of I-1s.
