He's always been a bit guy, by and large, mostly in genre films - no better way to get noticed by the "elites" who are usually too good to be in movies like his than to repeat the social shibboleths of the day.
Also, if I remember correctly they basically had to rebuild Hamill's face after a pretty gruesome car accident shortly after the first Star Wars movie came out. You can see a pretty dramatic shift in his appearance between the first two movies because of it. All that plastic surgery doesn't age well.
