That one was certainly a whopper of an article. Including the personal connection was a nice touch - it added weight to your discussion of pandering and performative wokeness that permeates current-year children's media in a thoughtful, tasteful way. I'm continually impressed with the amount of writing you can manage on the queen of Mattel. I'll try and condense my full thoughts at the conclusion of this series, but to summarise, I think pulling at this particular head of the Lernaean Lizard (Lake of Lerna - just got that!) holds more analytical value than others for studying the whole of the beast
PS. I was wondering when Equestria Girls would darken the doorstep of this blog. I daresay you underplay their controversy
Thank you, I'm glad that felt tasteful and and not tasteless. I stated this in the piece, but I really didn't want to sound as if I'm offended on her behalf or speak for her or sound as if I'm some zealous crusader for the rights of people with asperger's when, in my experience, most of them can do it themselves, because that really wouldn't make me better than the people I'm complaining about, but, at the same time... well, like I said, I don't want to break kayfabe or air anyone's dirty laundry, but I'm not as removed from it as, say, some white college girl stumping for the cause du jour without knowing or being close to anyone who's actually a part of, y'know?
Also, what can I say - I may not be autistic (or at least diagnosed) but I am given to the whims of my own hyper-fixations, but I'm also surprised on the wealth of information and analysis that can be done on the topic of Mattel and Barbie alike. I could probably write even more, and even longer articles on the topic, as well as the other brands under the umbrella, for months to come. I actually might touch on Mattel again, at the very least, because I ordered a book that goes more into the history and dirty dealing and corporate drama, which hasn't arrived yet and I doubt I'd be able to read in a very timely manner. But it is quite the long neck on the cultural hydra, indeed.
I actually don't know all that much about the whole Equestria Girls squabble. I know it got some pretty violent knee-jerk reactions from some of the more public brony figures, but at the same time, I feel like I never saw anyone complaining about it again, and if I ever did see it, it was people talking about it like they were okay with it. I'm not sure if it'll come up in any great measure in the following brony installments, but, if there's enough water in that well, I could do an entire piece on it.
Admirable, sir! "I gotta tell ya - this article did not go where I thought it would when I sat down to write it. I'm not sure I could have known it would end up going in the direction it did, or that I'd write all of… that. That'll teach me to try and cover a light topic."—my money is on your NOT internalizing that lesson AT ALL.
Oh, no, of course not. I've already forgotten there was a lesson to be learned, there. It is in my nature to over-analyze and take obsessive interest in niche topics and read far too deep into media that probably isn't all that deep to begin with - I cannot stop no more than a fish could stop swimming or a bird cease to fly.
My best friend in the world, since 6th grade, has Asperger’s. He’s chill enough about it that he’s not been above playing the “retard card” (his own words) to get us out of jams lol
But yeah, Love on the Spectrum or shows with ACTUAL autistic people are far better “representation” than whatever “here’s a quirky fellow, who’s also a super computer, and also a delicate snowflake” Hollywood usually puts out
Funny enough, it's the same thing with my best friend, who I've also known since 6th grade. I remember he used that exact excuse several times when he got in trouble for saying some very... not nice things. He's also described the "worst autism representation" in all of media as Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory. In his own words - "Sheldon Cooper and the consequences of his creation have been a disaster for the Autistic race." Is Sheldon canonically Autistic? I don't know. But people seem to think that he acts like what they apparently think Autism is.
I ask the same thing myself, and, I assume that it's largely for the same reason. That and I am a helpless slave to my hyperfixations. But it's mostly the goth gf part.

It is existentially upsetting to me to learn that there are sexy doll versions of the twins from the Shining.
If you think those are bad, you should see the Annabelle one. The last thing we needed was a sexy re-imagining of the Annabelle doll.
Okay. I'm going to be in the shower, drinking whiskey. It'll be a while.

I am wondering why you wrote a whole essay about girl's dolls. And also wondering why i read the whole thing?
Oh yeah, i remember. I want a Goth GF.
I feel dirty now.
(But seriously, it's a good piece. It's fun and relevant. Also, Happy Halloween!)
